Music

Dear Parents:

I have thoroughly enjoyed my stay at Oñate  Elementary school teaching music to your children through the district’s Fine Arts program. During the time I have been here the children have learned about the elements of music (beat, rhythm, melody, dynamics, tempo, and form).  We learned about these elements through songs, movement, listening, instrument playing and games.

I hope that your student has shared with you some of the things we have talked about in music as well as songs we have sung and dances we have learned.

There are many things you can do to help your child maintain his or her interest in music.  They include:

Taking your child to concerts and other musical events.Joining a choir, percussion or dance group.Consider the possibility of learning to play an instrument.Enrolling in classes offered by the UNM Music Prep School. If you feel that the music experience your child has had through the Fine Arts program has been beneficial, another important step you could take is to contact your Board of Education member. Please thank them for supporting the arts by funding art and music teachers in our elementary schools and encourage them to continue that support. Dear Parents:

My name is Janet Harmony and I am an itinerant music teacher with the APS Fine Arts program.  I will be the music teacher at Oñate Elementary for the spring semester.

The students at Oñate Elementary will have two 45 minute music lesson a week.  During this time, we will learn the elements of music (beat, rhythm, meter, dynamics, tempo, form, and melody).  The elements will be learned through songs, movement, listening, instrument playing and games.  Students will use critical thinking skills in relating music to other subjects like math, literacy, and social studies.

I hope that your student will share with you some of the things we learned and created in music.  I also encourage parents to listen to music with their children.  When the music is finished ask them to:

  • Identify the instruments they hear
  • Indicate loud and soft sounds, fast and slow melodies, high and low notes.
  • Tell you how the music makes them feel
  • Clap, tap or snap with you to the pulse of the music

Thank you for supporting the arts in your homes with your children and in our community. Your support does make a difference!

Sincerely,

Janet Harmony
